When does an eSIM plan start? Not when you buy it

Your days start counting the first time the eSIM connects to a network in the destination, so you can buy and install it months before your trip.

A lot of people wait until the day before a trip to buy a travel eSIM, because they assume the 7 or 30 days start ticking at checkout. For every plan we sell, that is not how it works.

The clock starts when you connect in the destination

Your plan's validity period begins the first time the eSIM connects to a mobile network in the country the plan is for. Until then it just sits on your phone, installed and waiting. Buying it does not start it. Installing it does not start it. Being connected to Wi-Fi at home does not start it.

So a 30-day Philippines plan bought in January and installed that evening is still a full 30-day plan when you land in Manila in March.

What if I turn the line on at home?

Nothing happens. A Philippines eSIM has no coverage in the US, so the phone cannot connect it to anything. The same goes for any of our single-country plans. You can leave the line switched on the whole flight if you like; the first real connection happens when your phone finds Smart or Globe on the tarmac.

How long can it wait?

You have 180 days from purchase to install and start using it. If you buy for a trip that is more than six months away, buy closer to the date.

Why buying early is better

You install it on good Wi-Fi at home instead of on airport Wi-Fi with a queue behind you.
If your phone turns out to be carrier-locked, you find out with time to fix it, not at the arrivals hall.
Your order email and QR code are already in your inbox when you land, even if you have no data yet.

One warning if you buy from other sellers: a few plans on the market, usually regional or global ones, do start on installation rather than on first connection. It is written in the fine print as "activation: first installation". None of our plans work that way.

Common questions

Does the plan start when I scan the QR code?

No. Scanning or tapping the install link puts the eSIM on your phone. The days start the first time it connects to a network in the destination.

I installed it a week ago and my order page says "Not activated". Is something wrong?

That is exactly right. It will switch to active the first time it connects abroad.

Can I pause it once it has started?

No. Once the first connection happens the days run continuously, whether you use data or not.
