Keep your number and WhatsApp while using a travel eSIM

How dual SIM works on a trip: your regular line stays on for calls and texts, the eSIM does the data, and WhatsApp carries on as if nothing changed.

The most common worry we hear before someone buys their first eSIM is "will I lose my number?" No. A travel eSIM is a second line that sits next to your existing one. Your number, your contacts and your chats all stay exactly where they are.

How the two lines share the phone

Every modern phone with eSIM is dual SIM. You choose which line does what:

• Calls and texts: your home line, so people can still reach you on your usual number. Incoming calls abroad may cost roaming fees depending on your carrier, but texts are usually free to receive.
• Mobile data: the travel eSIM. All your apps use it without knowing or caring which line it is.

On iPhone this is Settings, Cellular, then Cellular Data, where you pick the travel line. On Android it is under SIM manager or SIMs, then Mobile data. Our install page walks you through it for your exact phone.

WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, Telegram

These are tied to your phone number at signup, not to which SIM is providing data. Your existing account keeps working over the eSIM's data connection. You will receive messages, calls and group chats as usual. You do not need to re-verify anything.

The one case to know about: if you ever reinstall WhatsApp abroad, it will send a verification text to your home number. That arrives on your home line, which is why it is worth keeping that line switched on rather than deleting it.

Avoiding roaming charges on the home line

The travel eSIM is a data-only plan. Your home line can still quietly use data in the background if roaming is on, and that is where surprise bills come from. After you switch data to the eSIM, turn off Data Roaming on the home line only. Calls and texts on it still work.

Two-factor codes and bank apps

Text-message codes go to your home number and arrive on the home line, so keep it on. Banking apps run over data and work over the eSIM. A few banks flag logins that appear to come from a different country; see why your location may show a different country if that happens.

Common questions

Do I get a local phone number with the eSIM?

No. Our plans are data only. You keep your own number for calls and texts, and apps like WhatsApp work over data.

Can I take the physical SIM out instead?

You can, but there is no need, and you would stop receiving texts and verification codes. Leave it in and just switch data to the eSIM.

Will my carrier charge me for having roaming on?

Only if the home line uses data or you make and receive calls. With data roaming off on the home line, receiving texts is normally free. Check your carrier for calls.
